World Suicide Prevention Day – The Last Photo Exhibition

Trigger Warning – the following discusses themes around Suicide

This message is sent on behalf of Ellie Scott (Erewash Voluntary Action) and Rachel Bounds (Derbyshire Voluntary Action).

“Suicide doesn’t always look suicidal” CALM.

Inspired by the recent Last Photo exhibition held by CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably); a powerful and thought-provoking exhibition showing the last photo taken of people who have sadly taken their lives (see the exhibition here https://www.thecalmzone.net/thelastphoto) we have decided to hold a similar event in Chesterfield. Honouring those who have taken their lives, sharing their stories, their friends and their families.

‘The Last Photo’ – an exhibition in support of World Suicide Prevention Day to raise awareness and provide a space for people to talk openly and compassionately about suicide and mental health.

For more information or to get involved, please contact georgiabirdfoundation@gmail.com or rachel@dva.org.uk

When will the event take place?
The exhibition will be open daily between 10am-3pm from Monday 5th September 2022 to Saturday 10th September 2022.

Where will the event take place?

  • We are running a week-long event in The Hub @ Low Pavement
  • We will also be holding a public living room at Vicar Lane shopping centre

With the support of Chesterfield SoBS, The Tomorrow Project, Mentell, Kakou and Social Prescribers, we are creating a space where colleagues and volunteers can connect with members of the public and raise awareness on suicide prevention, signposting where people can go for support. Additionally, there will be a space exhibiting art created by our groups and colleagues that highlight what mental health means to them.

What can you do to show your support?
We are hoping groups and voluntary sector colleagues will want to join us on this journey. This will be a safe and compassionate space that holds meaningful conversations and raises awareness of suicide and how we can best support people who may be struggling.

If you have a story to share of someone you may have lost, or would like to share your own story through art or creativity, then we would of course love you to be involved. If you would like to volunteer and offer us support during these events, please get in touch.

We respect that this is a sensitive subject, and it may be difficult for some people to get involved, however, if you know anyone who may be interested, please share with the people you know. As always, we thank you for your support and for everyone’s efforts in supporting people living with mental health.

For more information or to get involved, please contact georgiabirdfoundation@gmail.com or rachel@dva.org.uk

Free PPE and hygiene equipment

Derbyshire County Council has secured funding to assist vulnerable populations with obtaining resources to further reduce the risk of spreading infectious diseases including coronavirus, norovirus, and others. Adherence to infection prevention control measures is lower in certain population groups, due in part to financial barriers to purchase basic supplies.

Derbyshire County Council currently hold supplies of disposable facemasks, hand sanitiser, liquid soaps, washing up liquid, kitchen/surface sanitiser, disposable cloths, household cleaning gloves, toilet cleaner, disposable bin liners and disposable aprons, along with an advice leaflet on how to use these safely and effectively.

If you work with people in Derbyshire who are struggling financially and may not be able to afford the products listed above, your organisation/group can apply to become a Trusted Partner to help distribute these resources.  If your application is approved, you will be able to place regular orders for the products required.

There is a simple online order system and Derbyshire County Council Logistics Hub will arrange to deliver your products to your specified destination ready for you to disseminate.

Order one months supply and then simply replenish your stock as required.

You will need to register here . Once your application has been reviewed by the panel, Derbyshire County Council will be in touch and if approved, they will send you the link to start placing your order and the products will be delivered to you.

This Woman’s Work – art exhibition by local artist Sue Dickins

Local artist, Sue Dickins, will be holding her first exhibition in August at West Studios in Chesterfield. The exhibition is being supported by Derbyshire Voluntary Action’s Feeling Connected project, which aims to improve social connectedness in Chesterfield and North East Derbyshire.

Natalie Evans, Feeling Connected Social Prescribing Link Worker, is supporting Sue with the exhibition and is keen that Sue’s art is seen by as many people as possible.

The exhibition entitled ‘This Woman’s Work’ is a collection of figurative pieces, and Sue’s aim is to tell the stories of the women in the portraits through her art rather than words alone.

Framed originals and professionally reproduced limited edition prints will be available to purchase during the exhibition.

The exhibition launches on Saturday 6th August, 6pm – 9pm at West Studios on Sheffield Road, Chesterfield S41 7LL.
The exhibition then runs from Monday 8th August to Friday 26th August, 1am – 4pm Monday to Friday.

Please come along to view these paintings and meet Sue for a friendly chat and to answer any questions you may have.

You can read more about Sue and her work in this blog https://www.weststudios.co.uk/news/2022/6/14/sue-dickins-exhibiting-artist-august-2022
